The president summons Katrin Jakobsdottir of the Left Green party

Deliberations to form a three-party majority government with the Independence party, Resurrection and Bright Future have failed and will not continue. The reason for the discontinuation is an irreconcilable disagreement particularly when it comes to the fishing industry according to a report by Visir.

Chairman of the Independence party, Bjarni Benediktsson, had received the mandated from the president after the 2016 general elections on October 30th where his party received a huge majority of the vote (29,1%). Since his efforts to form a government have been unsuccessful he must return the mandate and the party that with the second biggest vote is most likely to receive the mandate.

The president has summoned Katrin Jakobsdottir, chairwoman of the Left Green party. Jakobstottir said in an interview on the channel two evening news that the setting is not a simple one, that she had how ever had good dialogs with the other parties since the elections took place. The chairmen of Bright Future and Vidreisn have both stated the possibility of collaborating with the left green is on the table. Jakobstottir meeting with the President is taking place today and she is expected to receive the mandate.

Katrin Jakobsdottir has been hailed in many surveys to be one of Iceland’s most trusted politician and when polls ask who people would like to see as the prime minister, her name is repentantly high on the list. The Left Green Party received 15,8% and the Pirates 14,4 %. The possibilities on the table for Jakobsdottir to form a three, or even a four party majority are much more diverse than those of Benediktsson and Jakobsdottir has said that she is ready to examine her option with an open mind.
