Fast Times in Akranes Iceland

The mayor of Akranes, Regína Ásvaldsdóttir, has recently confirmed that the eighth chapter of the mega-grossing Hollywood franchise The Fast and The Furious will be in part filmed on location in the small town in West Iceland, just 45 km from Reykjavík. Regína has stated that residents of Akranes are excited for film crews to arrive in March and begin filming in April, as their presence is expected to greatly boost the town’s economy.

It has been reported that the filming will primarily take place in the harbor area of Akranes, where Vin Diesel will be driving race cars along the docks. There is also a large abandoned cement plant, called the Cement Fields, which will feature in the film. It has been estimated that the film crews will be bringing at least 80 cars to use in the shooting. In addition, rumors have been circulating that the crews are preparing to create the largest cinematic explosion ever to occur in Iceland.

Akranes won’t be the only location where filming takes place for Fast 8. There are two other as-yet-unannounced locations in Iceland which will provide the backdrop for scenes in the movie.

The last installment of the Fast and Furious movies, Fast 7, ranked sixth in record ticket sales worldwide, grossing 1.5 million USD.
