Snowden makes Norway asylum application

Snus spat erupts in NorwayNSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has applied for asylum in Norway, according to the country’s foreign minister. Norway foreign ministry spokesperson Frode Andersen confirmed that they received a faxed asylum application at their Moscow embassy on Monday afternoon. He added that it’s most likely from Mr Snowden and the signature is allegedly his, but they cannot be 100 per cent sure of that.

The spokesman gave no details about the letter’s content or from where the asylum application was faxed from.

Snowden, who faces charges in the US for leaking secret surveillance information, has gone on record as saying the US government is refusing his right to seek asylum, revealed a WikiLeaks statement earlier on Monday.

Snowden’s statement said after promising to allow him his asylum rights, President Barack Obama has instructed his Vice President Joe Biden to apply pressure on leaders of countries from which he has sought protection to reject his asylum petitions. He added that for a world leader to show such deception is not justice.

The US is on an international manhunt for former National Security Agency contractor Snowden, who faces espionage charges for blowing the whistle on classified information about secret US Internet and phone activity. He is currently believed to be in transit at a Moscow airport.
