Iceland residents have been experiencing strong winds for the past 48 hours, with gusts exceeding 100 km/h in Reykjavik and elsewhere around the country.
Injuries sustained from flying debris have been reported and the police is warning pedestrians and travellers to be extremely cautious.
Photos and videos of the extreme weather have been circulating online all day today. The winds unfortunately coincide with this year’s Iceland Airwaves festival, whereby thousands of music lovers have travelled from across the globe, including visitors from the East Coast who were previously stranded due to hurricane Sandy.
Iceland’s rescue team has been called out more than 500 times today, with 380 calls coming from the capital area only.
Strong winds are expected to continue until Saturday evening.
