Icelandic president opens international oceans summit

The President of Iceland, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson, yesterday gave the opening address at the World Oceans Summit in Singapore.

The Economist magazine is sponsoring the summit and the Icelandic president and the magazine’s editor sat for a joint question and answer session after the opening address.

The world summit is comprised of many events, including symposia on ocean research, the development of sustainable and profitable fisheries, international co-operation and the roles and responsibilities of individual nations. Discussions will also be held on lessons learned from international ocean treaties and the need for new treaties on fish stocks outside territorial waters, the future of the Arctic and Antarctic seas and on climate change,.

In his address President Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson emphasised the importance of increased research into the oceans and their resources, discussed Icelanders’ experience and the organisation of fishing quotas based on scientific research.

Participants in the summit are largely from Europe, Asia and the Americas and around 200 oceans and fisheries expert professionals are in attendance, among the other deligates.

World Bank head Robert Zoellick will be the summit’s keynote speaker as the World Bank is primarily concerned with improving prosperity and economic activity in developing countries, a statement from the Icelandic president’s office says.
