Man survives in snow-covered car for two months

A Swedish man has been rescued after spending two months in his snow-covered car without food or water.

The 45 year-old, who was so weak he could hardly speak, was found on Friday when snowmobilers dug his car out, initially thinking it was a wreck until they saw movement inside.

The man claims to have been trapped in his car since 19th December, surviving only by drinking melted snow. Police have confirmed that his vehicle was found on a forest track near Umea, northern Sweden, and that they have no reason to doubt his story.

According to the Vasterbotten Courier newspaper, the man had only a sleeping bag to keep him warm as temperatures in the country dropped to -30°C.

“He was in a very poor state. Poor condition,” policeman Ebbe Nyberg told the newspaper. “He said he’d been there for a long time and had survived on a little snow. He said himself he hadn’t eaten anything since December,” he added.

The 45 year-old is now recovering at Umea University Hospital where staff say he is doing well. One doctor told the Vasterbotten Courier that the man may have survived beyond the typical four weeks without food if his body went into a kind of hibernation.
