Westfjords music festival drawing international crowd

The northwest Icelandic town of Isafjordur may be best known for its Easter rock festival, but its more classical-based music festival, Vid Djupid, is growing fast and is on right now.

It is the ninth time the Vid Djupid music festival has taken place in Isafjordur — and always at the time of year when the sun is highest in the sky and the night never gets dark.

Some 30 students are visiting this year’s festival for its music master-classes and there will also be open lessons for proficient musicians.

Learning and teaching are only a part of the festival, however. There is also an extensive programme of concerts.

A composition competition was held in co-operation with RAS 1 radio over the winter whereby young composers were given the opportunity to write a piece for an oboe quartet which will be attending from New York. The piece will be performed at the festival, RUV reports.

Among the many other performers due to play is Alessio Bax from Italy. He will play solo piano and also perform with his Canadian wife, Lucille Chung.
