Bjorgvin G. Sigurdsson intends to return to his seat in the Icelandic Althingi parliament on Friday following Althingi’s decision not to charge him with negligence in the run up to the banking collapse.
Sigurdsson (SD) was the trade minister in the Independence Party – Social Democrat government which ran Iceland from 2007 until early 2009. It was his resignation which sparked the collapse of the government and new elections last spring. He was re-elected for the Social Democrats last spring, but vowed not to take his seat until questions of his competency and motives were resolved. He now feels the time is right to return to parliament, but he will not be a minister. He confirmed his return to a Visir.is journalist via text message.
