Icelandic businessman Jon Asgeir Johannesson paid off his USD 10 million mortgage a few weeks ago. The mortgage on his luxury New York apartment was paid by bank transfer from his personal Royal Bank of Canada account.
Jon Asgeir and his wife, Ingibjorg Palmadottir own a 16th floor flat in the Gramercy Park North area, DV reports. They bought it for USD 10 million and also bought the loft above it for USD 14 million.
As previously reported, the resolution committee of Glitnir Bank is pursuing Jon Asgeir and six others for ISK 260 billion (USD over 2 billion). The administrators of the bankrupt bank blame Johannesson of having been part of a clique of owners and shareholders which robbed the bank from within.
Jon Asgeir is facing charges in New York and London and Palmi Haraldsson, Ingibjorg Palmadottir, Thorsteinn M. Jonsson, Hannes Smarason, Jon Sigurdsson, Larus Welding and the auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers are also facing charges in New York brought by Glitnir.
