Iceland ‘roadmap to recovery’ signed

reykjavik-signPrime Minister Johanna Sigurdardottir wished Iceland congratulations on the signing of its new stability pact at a ceremony this afternoon at the National Culture House.

“This is an important stepping stone and a real premise upon which to base the economic revival work over the coming period,” she said.

The Prime Minister went on to thank all those who participated in the creation of the deal.

Eirikur Jonsson, head of the Icelandic Teaching Union, said he has many hopes for the outcome of the agreement. Its value will, however, only become clear in hindsight.

“All this work means we can increase national productivity  and help stimulate the jobs market in the future,” said Vilhjalmur Egilson, head of the Confederation of Icelandic Employers. Egilson reiterated his position that the key areas are to be able to lift currency restrictions and lower interest rates as soon as possible.

“We are trying to pull together in the same direction to try and ensure that the predictions of disaster which we’ve been hearing for many months do not come true. That is the ultimate task at hand.”
